I just installed about 500 sq ft of hardwood floor and used floor muffler. While it is a bit of a chore to get it to lay flat (use some flooring pieces at each end as weights) it does go down fairly easily. Get a friend to help you lay it down – keeping everything straight can be a challenge by yourself.

    Pros

    - Quiet, the floor makes no noise

    - The film strip and built in adhesive are a big help – no taping necessary on longitudinal seams – you will need to tape it together on butt seams

    - GREAT customer service. I e-mailed them at 8pm one evening thinking I would get my questions answered sometime in the next few weeks. At 8:15pm that same evening I had my answers.

    Cons

    - AWFUL instructions

Here are the instructions I used with help from the company:

The film side is the side with the wide pink stripe and the narrow blue stripe.

The pink stripe unfolds to double its width – this lets you lay down a strip next to it without a gap. The blue stripe is the adhesive strip – remove the blue to expose the adhesive – then stick it down to the pink that you unfolded on the other piece.

The instructions also say to lay down only what you are immediately covering with flooring. This is next to impossible to do if you lay it down perpendicular to the flooring (as you should). Lay it all down at once. It is tough as nails and provided you are not wearing cleats, you will not tear it. If you are worried, you can lay down some hardboard to walk on – that will protect the underlayment.

Suggestion – buy enough so you do not have to join pieces for length. It is much easier to keep things straight when all of the seams run one way.

  2. We installed this in a dance studio and wow did it ever cut the echo! Before, dancing with tap shoes was too loud and earphones had to be worn to avoid hearing loss, and most detailed footwork was lost in the drowning noise. After installing this and then laminate on top, the noise is reduced so much it’s the perfect sound level even for tap dance. Absolutely recommend!

  3. I looked at a lot of products. I wanted the highest sound ratings possible combined with ease of use. This floor has excellent sound absorption. Even with hard soles it is quiet. It actually sounds better than my 3/4″ hardwood that I put down with a red paper underlayment. What I found especially great about Floor Muffler was how you abutted the sides. You don’t need to buy any additional tape. It came with a wide plastic band of material adhered to one side and a 1/2″ strip of adhesive material on the other side. You remove the tape off the adhesive material and stick it to the plastic material. Not only does this create a water impermeable seam, it allows for a perfect abuttment of the edges. The only thing that I found weird was that the instructions say to lay the underlayment in the opposite direction of the laminate. All other products say to lay in the same direction. This product is not flimsy at all and is similar to a 1/8″ piece of foam rubber. It is pretty difficult to rip or get holes in it while you are installing it or your floor.

  4. I purchased the muffler based on comments on the Web, but it turned out to be a mistake.

Comparing to Quiet Walk, this one is thin and easy to break.

My contractor told me the 3 in 1 from HomeDeport is much better.

And he suggested we put two layers of 6 mil plastics under the muffler to be safe.

I should have gone with Quiet Walk as before.

We were really concerned that our floor didn’t sound hollow so after reading reviews for all the underlayment products we picked this one. It worked great. We layed down the laminet flooring next to actual hardwood and you can hardly tell the difference walking from one to the other. It was easy to work with too. Would definitely use it again.
